Queensland's state seats: Brisbane stayed Labor while the regions went LNP

Of Queensland's 93 state districts, 74 were won by the same side in 2020 and 2024. The 19 that changed hands were nearly all Labor seats won by the LNP in 2024, mostly outside Brisbane. Three in four Brisbane residents live in a district Labor won both times; in the rest of the state, more than half live in one the LNP won both times. Aspley was decided by less than a tenth of a percentage point.

Queensland voted in October 2020 and October 2024 on the same 93 districts, drawn in 2017; new boundaries take effect at the 2028 election. We compared the winner in every district.

74 of the 93 districts were won by the same side both times: 35 by Labor, 34 by the LNP, three by Katter's Australian Party, one by the Greens (Maiwar) and one by an independent (Noosa). The other 19 changed hands.

Brisbane and the rest of Queensland

We matched every suburb to its district and counted residents at the 2021 Census:

Residents living in a district... Brisbane Rest of Queensland
Labor won both times 73.7% 8.0%
the LNP won both times 11.7% 56.5%
that changed hands 11.8% 27.9%
another party won both times 2.8% 7.6%

In 2024 Labor won 32 of the 42 districts that are mostly in Brisbane, and the LNP won 43 of the other 51. "Brisbane" here is the ABS's Brisbane urban area, so the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast count as the rest of Queensland.

The 19 that changed hands

17 went from Labor to the LNP in 2024. Most were outside Brisbane: Cook, Barron River and Mulgrave around Cairns; Townsville, Mundingburra and Thuringowa in Townsville; Mackay, Keppel and Rockhampton; Maryborough and Hervey Bay; Caloundra and Nicklin on the Sunshine Coast. In Brisbane, the LNP won Redlands, Capalaba, Redcliffe and Pumicestone.

The other two: Mirani, west of Mackay, went from One Nation to the LNP, and South Brisbane went from the Greens to Labor.

Since 2024

Two by-elections have been held. Hinchinbrook, north of Townsville, changed hands: Katter's Australian Party had won it in 2020 and 2024, and the LNP won the by-election in November 2025. Stafford, in Brisbane's north, stayed Labor in May 2026.

How we counted

  • Results are the Electoral Commission of Queensland's final counts after preferences for 2020 and 2024 and its by-election results since, used as facts: who won, their party and their share in the final count.
  • The LNP is counted as one side; Katter's Australian Party, One Nation and the Greens separately.
  • Residents are 2021 Census counts for each suburb, matched to the district its suburb falls in. A district counts as Brisbane's when most of its residents live in the Brisbane urban area.

Every Queensland suburb page now shows its state district, its member and these results.
