Best Wollongong suburbs for rooftop solar

Albion Park tops the ranking, with 60.1 rooftop-solar systems installed for every 100 dwellings in its postcode, averaging 6.93 kW each. Across the 15 listed, the rate runs from 28.7 to 60.1 systems per 100 dwellings. These 15 suburbs came from a field of 17 eligible Wollongong suburbs.

This ranking scores every eligible Wollongong suburb on how many rooftop-solar systems have been installed for every 100 dwellings in its postcode, blended with the average size of those systems and how many went up in the past year. Detached housing and roof space drive most of the difference, so the outer suburbs generally sit above the inner ones.

Installation records are published by postcode, not by suburb, so every suburb sharing a postcode shares these figures and each postcode appears once — represented by its largest suburb. The count is of systems installed since 2001, which is not the same as the number of homes with solar today: a system replaced or upgraded on a roof that already had panels is counted again, and small commercial systems up to 100 kW are included alongside houses. Postcodes where recent construction has outrun the 2021 dwelling count are left out rather than published, because there the figure measures how fast the suburb was built rather than how much solar it has.

How we ranked these

70% rooftop-solar installations per 100 dwellings · 15% average system size in kilowatts · 15% systems installed in the past year per 100 dwellings — each percentile-ranked within Wollongong's candidate pool. All three are rates rather than counts, so a big postcode cannot out-rank a keen one on size alone. The Clean Energy Regulator publishes installations by postcode, so each postcode is collapsed to one representative suburb before scoring. The count is of systems installed since 2001 against the 2021 Census dwelling base: a system replaced or upgraded on a roof that already had panels counts again, and small commercial systems up to 100 kW are included, so this is a comparison between postcodes rather than an estimate of the share of homes with a working system today. Common questions about this ranking

What are the best Wollongong suburbs for rooftop solar?

Albion Park tops the ranking, with 60.1 rooftop-solar systems installed for every 100 dwellings in its postcode, averaging 6.93 kW each. Across the 15 listed, the rate runs from 28.7 to 60.1 systems per 100 dwellings. These 15 suburbs came from a field of 17 eligible Wollongong suburbs.

How is this ranking scored?

Each eligible Wollongong suburb is scored on three factors, all of them rates: rooftop-solar installations per 100 dwellings (70% of the score), the average size of those systems in kilowatts, and how many systems went up in the past year per 100 dwellings. Percentiles are computed within Wollongong's candidate pool, so a suburb is ranked against the rest of the city rather than the national field. The top 15 are published.

Why are the numbers postcode-level?

The Clean Energy Regulator publishes installations by postcode, not by suburb, so every suburb inside a postcode carries the same figures. Ranking them individually would fill the list with near-identical clones of the same postcode, so each postcode appears once, represented by its largest suburb.

Does 60 installations per 100 dwellings mean 60% of homes have solar?

No, and the gap runs both ways. The count is of systems installed since 2001, so a system replaced or upgraded on a roof that already had panels is counted a second time, and small commercial systems up to 100 kW are counted alongside houses. Against that, the dwelling base is the 2021 Census. The figure is a good comparison between postcodes and a poor estimate of the share of homes with a working system today.

Why isn't my suburb here?

Three reasons account for almost all of them. The suburb may sit below the population floor; its postcode may have too few dwellings to put a rate on; or the postcode may have been built out so fast since 2021 that the dwelling count no longer describes it — in that case the rate measures construction rather than solar, and it is left out rather than published wrong. Apartment-heavy inner postcodes are also genuinely near the bottom: there is little roof per dwelling to put panels on.
