Best beachside suburbs in Melbourne

Middle Park tops the ranking, 363 m from the water. 13 of the 15 suburbs listed sit within a kilometre of the water. These 15 came from a field of 41 Melbourne suburbs that cleared every gate.

This ranking covers every Melbourne suburb of 2,000 residents or more that sits within 3 km of the ocean. Among the suburbs that qualify, the order is decided by how close the water is, how much of the suburb can be reached on foot, and how it scores on bushfire, crime and flood risk.

Weather is deliberately left out of the score here. Almost every suburb in one city draws on the same handful of weather stations, so a rainfall ranking would sort the stations rather than the suburbs — it only becomes a real signal across a whole state, which is what the coastal towns lists use it for. Distance is measured from the centre of the suburb to the nearest point on the mapped shoreline, so a suburb spread back from its own beach reads farther out than a walk from the sand would suggest. Coastal towns beyond the metro boundary are ranked separately, because choosing between a beachside suburb and a coastal town is a different decision entirely.

Suburbs within 3 km of the ocean inside the {location} metro area, ranked on how close the water is, walkability and safety. Rainfall is not scored here: the whole metro shares its weather stations, so it would rank the stations rather than the suburbs.

How we ranked these

45% closeness to the ocean · 25% safety (bushfire, crime, flood combined) · 30% walkability. Distance to the water is measured in a straight line from the centre of the suburb to the nearest point on the Digital Earth Australia Coastlines shoreline, so a large locality whose township sits inland of its own shoreline reads farther out than the walk would suggest. We rank on the shoreline rather than on mapped beaches because OpenStreetMap holds only about 1,870 beaches for the whole country and does not record which sit on the ocean — going by those would drop genuinely coastal towns and admit river towns hundreds of kilometres inland. Where a named beach is mapped nearby we show that distance too, but it never decides the order. Weather is deliberately not scored here. Almost every suburb in one metro area draws on the same handful of Bureau of Meteorology stations, so a rainfall ranking would be sorting the stations rather than the suburbs — it is only a real signal across a whole state, which is what the coastal towns lists use it for. Walkability takes that weight instead, since among suburbs that are all near the water it is what actually separates them. This list is the other half of that split: only suburbs inside Melbourne's metro area, out to 50 km from the CBD. Coastal towns beyond it are ranked on their own state list, because the choice between a beachside suburb and a coastal town is a different decision — different prices, different commutes. A town with no weather station in range is left off rather than scored on a guess. Walkability is the exception: where a town has no score it takes the pool median, because coverage thins out in small towns and dropping on it would empty the very lists this page exists to publish. Common questions about this ranking

What are the best beachside suburbs in Melbourne?

Middle Park tops the ranking, 363 m from the water. 13 of the 15 suburbs listed sit within a kilometre of the water. These 15 came from a field of 41 Melbourne suburbs that cleared every gate.

How is the distance to the coast measured?

In a straight line from the centre point of the suburb to the nearest point on the Digital Earth Australia Coastlines shoreline, and a town qualifies at 3,000 m or closer. It is not a walking route and not a distance from any particular street, so a large locality whose township sits inland of its own shoreline will read farther out than the walk from its main street would suggest. Read it as how coastal the town is, not as how long it takes to reach the water.

Why rank on the shoreline instead of on beaches?

OpenStreetMap holds about 1,870 beaches for the whole of Australia and does not record which of them are on the ocean. Ranking on the nearest mapped beach therefore fails both ways: it would drop Nhulunbuy, Victor Harbor and Apollo Bay, which are all within 600 m of the sea but far from anything mapped as a beach, and it would admit Shepparton, which is close to a beach on the Goulburn River and 167 km from the ocean. The shoreline dataset has no such gaps. Where a named beach is mapped near a town we show how far it is, but it does not affect the ranking.

Why isn't the weather part of the score?

Almost every suburb in one city draws on the same few Bureau of Meteorology stations, so ranking them on rainfall would sort the stations rather than the suburbs. Weather only separates places at a scale where the stations genuinely differ, which is why it is scored on the coastal towns lists — those cover a whole state — and carries no weight here. Walkability takes that share of the score instead.

Where are the coastal towns beyond Melbourne?

On their own list. This page covers suburbs inside the Melbourne metro area, out to 50 km from the CBD. Coastal towns past that boundary are ranked per state, because choosing between a beachside suburb and a coastal town is a different decision — different prices, different commutes.

Why is a Melbourne suburb I expected missing?

Almost always the 3 km line: plenty of suburbs that feel coastal sit behind a headland or up an estuary and measure farther from open water than they seem. The distance is taken from the centre of the suburb, so a large one whose houses cluster near the beach still reads from its middle. A suburb also needs at least 2,000 residents, and closeness to the water is 45% of the score — a suburb can clear every gate and still rank low on walkability or safety.
