Where the Afghan community lives in Gold Coast

This page ranks Gold Coast suburbs by where the Afghan community is most established, using the 2021 Census. Suburbs are ordered by the share of residents who were born in Afghanistan. Only suburbs with at least 2,000 residents are ranked.

Other community pages show two or three census angles side by side — ancestry, country of birth, language spoken at home — but the ABS publishes only one for the Afghan community, and a zero in place of a question that was never asked would read as an absence of people. Percentile ranks are computed within Gold Coast's pool. This is descriptive demographic information, not a recommendation. The census publishes no Afghan ancestry category, so country of birth is the only published signal. Dari, Pashto and Hazaragi are not published as separate suburb-level languages — the nearest field, Persian, explicitly excludes Dari — so no language share is shown rather than one that would undercount the community.

Where the Afghan community lives in Gold Coast

Ranked by the share of residents who were born in Afghanistan in the 2021 Census, among suburbs with at least 2,000 residents.

Not enough Gold Coast suburbs have an established community of this size to produce a meaningful ranking. Suburbs need at least 2,000 residents and a non-trivial community count in the 2021 Census to appear.

How we ranked these

Ranked on the share of residents born in the relevant country (ancestry fragments across sub-groups, so birthplace is the more reliable signal here) in the 2021 Census, percentile-ranked within Gold Coast's candidate pool. Every suburb also shows all three census angles — ancestry, country of birth, and language spoken at home — because no single number captures a community on its own. Only suburbs with at least 2,000 residents qualify. Ancestry is a multiple-response question, so shares read as "residents who reported this ancestry", not an exclusive count. Descriptive ABS Census data, not a recommendation. See how we calculate for the full methodology.

Common questions about this ranking

How is this ranking put together?

Suburbs are ordered by the share of residents who were birthplace. The census publishes no Afghan ancestry category, so country of birth is the only published signal. Only suburbs with at least 2,000 residents are included, and percentile ranks are computed within Gold Coast's pool, so the list reflects concentration relative to other metro suburbs.

Why is only one figure shown per suburb?

Dari, Pashto and Hazaragi are not published as separate suburb-level languages — the nearest field, Persian, explicitly excludes Dari — so no language share is shown rather than one that would undercount the community. Other community pages show two or three census angles side by side, but the ABS publishes a fixed list of ancestries, birthplaces and languages, and they do not cover every community equally. We show the figures that exist rather than filling the gaps with a zero, which would read as an absence of people instead of an absence of a question.

How current is it?

The figures are from the 2021 Census, the most recent available until results from the August 2026 Census are released in 2027. The top 15 is recomputed whenever we refresh the census data.
