Where the British community lives in Canberra
Yarralumla has the largest British community: 6.2% of residents were born in the UK. Deakin and Chapman follow. These 15 suburbs came from a field of 94 eligible Canberra suburbs.
This page ranks Canberra suburbs by where the British community is most established, using the 2021 Census. Suburbs are ordered by the share of residents who were born in the UK. Only suburbs with at least 2,000 residents are ranked.
Other community pages show two or three census angles side by side — ancestry, country of birth, language spoken at home — but the ABS publishes only one for the British community, and a zero in place of a question that was never asked would read as an absence of people. Percentile ranks are computed within Canberra's pool. This is descriptive demographic information, not a recommendation. The census publishes no British ancestry category — English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish are separate answers, and adding them together would invent a grouping the ABS never measured. Country of birth is the published British figure.

Ranked from 94 qualifying suburbs.
Ranked on the share of residents born in the relevant country (ancestry fragments across sub-groups, so birthplace is the more reliable signal here) in the 2021 Census, percentile-ranked within Canberra's candidate pool. Every suburb also shows all three census angles — ancestry, country of birth, and language spoken at home — because no single number captures a community on its own. Only suburbs with at least 2,000 residents qualify. Ancestry is a multiple-response question, so shares read as "residents who reported this ancestry", not an exclusive count. Descriptive ABS Census data, not a recommendation. See how we calculate for the full methodology.
Common questions about this ranking
How is this ranking put together?
Suburbs are ordered by the share of residents who were born in the UK. The census publishes no British ancestry category — English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish are separate answers, and adding them together would invent a grouping the ABS never measured. Country of birth is the published British figure. Only suburbs with at least 2,000 residents are included, and percentile ranks are computed within Canberra's pool, so the list reflects concentration relative to other metro suburbs.
Why is only one figure shown per suburb?
Other community pages show two or three census angles side by side, but the ABS publishes a fixed list of ancestries, birthplaces and languages, and they do not cover every community equally. We show the figures that exist rather than filling the gaps with a zero, which would read as an absence of people instead of an absence of a question.
How current is it?
The figures are from the 2021 Census, the most recent available until results from the August 2026 Census are released in 2027. The top 15 is recomputed whenever we refresh the census data.
